Fabian Hawk
Fabian Hawk is a 6yo gelding by Turn Me Loose. He has previously won three flat races and has come to our stable for a change of pace from a bigger stable. This concept has been well proven to produce great jumpers and give Thoroughbreds a second chance after flat racing. Horses that do jumps racing also have many flat starts as well over the season to help in their preparation and get them fit.
Jumps Racing has just been given a three year reprieve and we are wanting to get new people involved and along to see the thrill of jumps racing to keep it going now and into the future. Jumps racing is an important part of our stable and is a pathway for many up and coming trainers like us to get their start.
Makohau Stables is a boutique pre training and racing stable in Turakina Valley. We are a hill country sheep and beef farm which enables us to give our horses and outside horses a variety of work. Our horses are kept in a variety of either large boxes or custom made sand yards. We are also close to Wanganui Racecourse, local beaches and another trainers large training track.
We have recently done a big push on rebranding ourselves and our Facebook page in order to start attracting more new owners into the industry.
Horses aren’t cheap, however we are competitively priced in order to make horse ownership accessible to as many people as possible. We offer lease shares too which means there isn’t the big upfront cost compared to buying directly into a horse from somewhere like Karaka sales. We have plenty of farmers in our ownerships and heading to a Raceday is a good time to get them off the farm. The races traditionally have a good rural backing and having a beer and chat with like minded individuals is key for farmers mental health, especially last season when prices weren’t so great. We have an open stable policy, meaning we are encourage owners to come at any time and see their horse working. We provide regular updates via WhatsApp and also our Facebook page. We race our horses primarily in the North Island but also believe in supporting South Island Carnivals to keep them running. We believe showing that there is a large range of people involved in racing in New Zealand will help benefit the industry. Getting some more ‘everyday people’.
